NES Book Fair & Literacy Night: Support Your Young Reader

North Elementary School hosts its Family Literacy Night on Tuesday, October 15. Students and their families can visit the school between 5:30 pm and 7 pm to shop the book fair and enjoy an ice cream social. The book fair is also open throughout the week for students to make purchases on their own.

Family Literacy Night is a fun opportunity for families to spend time together, but it’s also a great opportunity to encourage your student to read.

According to a recent study, a child who starts reading 20 minutes per day in kindergarten will read 1.8 million words per year. By 6th grade, they will have read more than 850 hours and will have a great chance at scoring in the top 90% among their peers on standardized tests.

What can you do to promote reading at home? Below are a couple tips to jumpstart your child’s reading:

Keep books available in your home. Reading starts with the availability of books in the home. That may seem obvious, but many children don’t become avid readers because they don’t have material available that interests them.

Find out what they love and look for books that will pique their interest. Our book fairs carry a wide range of different types of books and genres. The Madison Public Library also offers a wide selection of books for a variety of different ages and reading levels.

Read with them. Children learn behaviors from their parents. You can influence their actions by setting a good example. If they see you reading, they’ll be more likely to read. Even better, if you offer to read with them, they’ll be more excited to do it. Children love individualized attention from their parents. Make nightly reading a special time between you and your child. The book fair and Family Literacy Night is the perfect time for you and your young reader to pick out a book together.

We hope to see all of our North Elementary School families on October 15!
