Bears Make the Best Reading Buddies for SES Students

Superintendent Angela Smith reads to students

Madison Local Schools superintendent Angela Smith recently joined kindergartners at South Elementary School for a very special reading celebration. She read the book, “Bears Make the Best Reading Buddies,” which tells the story of a girl named Adelaide and her special reading buddy, which is a bear.

The event kicked off the Pepoy Memorial Reading Project, which was inspired by Mrs. Smith’s parents, Joseph and Phyllis Pepoy. Mr. Pepoy was a teacher for his entire career, and Mrs. Pepoy loved children and was a lifelong supporter of education.

Mrs. Pepoy passed away last year and left behind a collection of stuffed bears. Mrs. Smith decided to give those bears to the elementary classrooms at SES so students could use the bears as reading buddies. Students will also receive their very own Pepoy Memorial Reading Project bookmark later in the year.

Students at SES also got to design their very own bears. Those designs were passed onto students in Mrs. Clark’s class at Madison High School. The MHS students used their skills and talents to bring the designs to life and create stuffed bears based on the SES drawings. The MHS students then delivered the stuffed bears to their SES counterparts.

Our staff and students enjoyed this fun kickoff event. We look forward to more Pepoy Memorial Reading Project events throughout the year, and we hope to see all of our SES kindergartners spending time with their new reading buddies.
