Madison Local Schools would like to welcome Mr. Doug Baker as the new Principal at North Elementary School! This is Mr. Baker’s third year in the district, previously serving as North Elementary’s Assistant Principal for one year and as a High School Assistant Principal the year before that.
Mr. Baker received his Master’s in Curriculum, Instruction, and Education Administration from Ashland University and has been an educator for 34 years. Throughout his career, Mr. Baker spent two years working as a teacher in North Baltimore, OH; 26 years in Mentor as a teacher, coach, and advisor; Assistant Principal at Memorial Middle School for 11 years; and Principal at Shore Middle High School for 15 years. He also served as Principal of Rossiter Elementary School in Helena, Montana for three years before returning to Ohio in 2020.
“I wanted to keep Mr. Mayer’s work moving forward upon his departure,” says Mr. Baker. “NES has a great staff and supportive community; I look forward to seeing the children daily and watching the staff work with our children.”
In addition to being the Principal of NES, Mr. Baker is very involved within the district. He serves on multiple committees, including Safety, A-Team, and the District Leadership Team. He also oversaw the summer program held at Madison Middle School this past June.
“I have found that whenever you are in a position of leadership, it is essential to get to know your community and take the first year to identify what the strengths are and what opportunities for growth may exist,” Mr. Baker states. “Every district does things a little bit differently, making it important to get to know the processes and procedures by which things operate.”
Mr. Baker intends to strengthen NES’s instruction through the Open Court Reading program, which is a comprehensive K-3 reading, writing, and language arts curriculum that utilizes engaging resources, activities, and materials which aid students in developing critical reading and writing strategies; and through the Science of Reading, a district K-12 initiative. He also aims to continue building upon the strong PBIS system NES has in place to support students, staff, and families.
