Congratulations to the newest members of our National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)! On Monday, March 13, our Middle School’s NJHS inducted 30 new members, and on Tuesday, March 14, our High School’s NHS inducted 19. NHS and NJHS are worldwide organizations that aim to elevate a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. As a member of either organization, students are not only recognized for their accomplishments, but challenged to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community services.
To be a member of NHS or NJHS, students must show five pillars of character – leadership, service, scholarship, and citizenship – in and out of the classroom. For NHS eligibility, students had to be a Junior or Senior that held a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher, and for NJHS eligibility, students had to be a 6th or 7th grader that held a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Members of both organizations are required to collect a minimum number of service hours. At the High School, NHS members are required to complete three service hours per grading quarter; a community-based Individual Service Project (ISP); and a school-based Individual Service Project (ISP).
During the 2022-23 school year to date, NHS members have:
- Helped set up Chromebooks for kindergarteners at North Elementary
- Cleaned the fitness trail behind Madison Middle School to make it useable for the Madison Cross Country team and general public
- Created videos to educate children on bees and how they benefit our environment
- Visited the Middle School Band after-school to assist students with their musical abilities and individual pieces
- And more!
The NJHS is required to collect a minimum of two service hours per grading quarter and complete group service projects together. Their first group service project is to write fictional narratives with the North Elementary 3rd Grade students. NJHS students wrote stories using the information they collected from interviews conducted with their 3rd Grade partners. They are currently in the process of adding photos and then will be taking the books back to share with the 3rd graders – exciting!
NJHS students have also:
- Taught North Elementary students how to use and navigate their new Chromebooks and find cool math programs to use
- Attended a Kindness Rally sponsored by Mentor High School where students learned why kindness is so important and how to encourage acts of kindness within Madison Schools
- Planned a Kindness Assembly for Madison Middle School to ring in 2023 with positivity
Together, NHS and NJHS will be hosting the first-ever Blue Streak Block Party on Saturday, August 12, an event designed to bring the community and schools together for a day of fun activities, live music, a craft and vendor show, food trucks, and more. Students are currently in the planning stage and are working towards creating partnerships with community groups to provide a variety of activities for all ages at the event.
