During One School One Book, South Elementary students, teachers, and families brought The Tale of Desperaux by Kate DiCamillo to life. Every family and classroom received a copy of this book that follows the adventures of a mouse named Despereaux, who sets out on a quest to rescue a beautiful human princess from the rats. These books were provided courtesy of the PTO. Daily chapters were assigned for homework and videos of staff reading aloud were shared, as well.

South kicked off One School One Book with an assembly, where staff acted out various highlights of the story and the Principals read the first two chapters. Leading up to it, daily trivia questions were posed, allowing classes to win prizes. Additionally, there were multiple classroom connections including making class or individual crests, nominating characters from the book for Streak of the Week awards, drawing Despereaux himself, comparing rats and mice, discussing the vocabulary in the book, and more.

To finish off One School One Book, students and families participated in Family Night on May 19. Over 200 people attended! This event included:

  •  Royal Soup Tasting, which is the Queen’s favorite food from The Tale of Desperaux

  • Character costume making, that students could wear the next day at school

  • Book Fair, put on by the PTO

  • Obstacle course to Escape the Dungeon
