On November 5, six MHS Robotics students had the opportunity to attend NASA’s Young Astronaut Day at Cleveland State University (CSU). The event was held at NASA’s Glenn Research Center and was designed to challenge, educate, and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
The day was packed with learning opportunities and exposure to how STEM is used in real-life to further technology and our understanding of our world and the universe. Students met NASA engineers that work at the Research Center and learned from Diane Linne, retired NASA-Glenn Senior Research Engineer. Ms. Linne taught students about NASA’s Gateway mission to the moon and how they plan on mining for fuel. Students received a tour of CSU, where the Research Center is located, as CSU is one of NASA’s ten field centers. Students also explored the Dan T. Moore MakerSpace, an innovation and design lab for the CSU community that provides hands-on fabrication equipment for working with metal, wood, and plastic.
This year’s challenge was to build a glider from various materials. Gliders were then judged on slope and distance, and the glider with the best slope won.
