COVID-19 Update, May 8, 2020

Dear Madison Community,

It has been a busy week.  We have worked with Lake County Health Department, our senior class, and our administrative team to plan a commencement ceremony that captures all the pieces of what makes our Madison Commencement Ceremony special.

We surveyed the Senior class, and they overwhelmingly chose a small in-person ceremony where seniors will walk across the stage.  Each graduate will be permitted to bring four other family members.

While more details about the specific times and dates of the ceremony will be forthcoming from Mr. Fisher, we wanted to share with you the basic plan of the ceremony.  All involved will be required to wear masks at all times to ensure everyone’s safety.  The graduates will remove the mask when walking across the stage.  There will be two photo opportunities for the graduate.  The first will be the graduate walking across the stage, and a second will be of the family in front of the M in the cafeteria.  These photos will be our gift to the graduate.  In addition, we will be videotaping the individual students and incorporating the video into a virtual ceremony with all the elements of a Madison High School Commencement. We will broadcast this virtual ceremony at a later date.  In addition if things open up to allow a larger ceremony, we will do so and share that information here.

We have received numerous calls about Cap and Gown distribution. Students may pick up their cap and gown on Tuesday, May 12 from 2-5 p.m.  At that time, students are asked to return any textbooks and school materials they have, except for Chromebooks, which will be collected at a later date.  Senior families should look for a more detailed email Sunday evening regarding Commencement and Cap & Gown pick-up.

In other news, we are definitely winding down the school year.  In the coming days, you will be receiving information regarding the end of the year.  Each building is working on how students return and pick up materials.  There will be a separate chromebook drop-off.  Details regarding this process will be in next week’s update.

I know there are many questions about next year.  The Ohio Department of Education is working on guidance which will help all schools plan for next year.  In the near future, we will be sending out a survey to solicit input regarding families’ successes and concerns with remote learning.  We know there will be challenges going into next school year, and our families and staff will be a big part of the plan that we develop.  We are in this together.

While there are still many decisions to make, we are beginning to prepare for next year.  High School scheduling is underway, as well as Kindergarten registration.  If you know of a student who is of kindergarten age, please remind them to register.  This helps greatly in our planning.

As this is Mother’s Day Weekend, I want to wish all those who are mothers a very happy Mother’s Day.  This year more than ever, remembering our mothers helps keep us connected.  We are Madison Strong!
