Fundations

Our Fundations program helps the students with spelling rules rather than forcing them to practice and memorize a few words each week.  Here is a breakdown of which rules we cover in each unit. 
 

Unit 1 (2 weeks) - digraphs (wh, ch, sh, th, ck), blends, spelling of /k/ sound, closed syllable

Unit 2 (2 weeks) - bonus letters (f, l, s), glued sounds (all, am, an, ang, ank, ing, ink, ong, onk, ung, unk)

Unit 3 (1 week) - closed syllable exceptions (ild, ind, old, olt, ost), trick words (when, which, again, away, more)

Unit 4 (2 weeks) - basewords, suffixes (-s, -es, -ed, -est, -er, -ing), trick words (even, their, animal, here, use, used)

Unit 5 (2 weeks) - intro to multisyllabic words, compound words, suffixes (-able, -ment, -ful, -ness, -less, -en, -ish), trick words (water, knew, know)

Unit 6 (2 weeks) - vowel-consonant-e syllable, vowel-consonant-e exception (ive), suffix (-ive), trick words (often, house, move, right, place, together)

Unit 7 (2 weeks) - open syllable, y as a vowel, suffixes (-y, -ly, -ty), trick words (why, large, change, city, every, family)

Unit 8 (2 weeks) - r-controlled syllable (ar and or) and spelling rules for those sounds, trick words (world, answer, eye, carry, something, different)

Unit 9 (2 weeks) - r-controlled syllable (er, ir, and ur) and spelling rules for those sounds, trick words (picture, learn, earth)

Unit 10 (2 weeks) - double vowel syllable (ai and ay) and spelling rules for those sounds, homophones, trick words (great, country, America, example, thought)

Unit 11 (2 weeks) - double vowel syllable (ee, ea, and ey) and spelling rules for those sounds, trick words (too, school, son, breakfast, head, ready)

Unit 12 (2 weeks) - double vowel syllables (oi and oy) and spelling rules for those sounds, trick words (mother, father, brother, neighbor, early, ocean)

Unit 13 (2 weeks) - double vowel syllables (oa, oe, and ow) and the spelling rules for those sounds, trick words (Monday, Tuesday, cousin, lose, dance, beautiful)

Unit 14 (2 weeks) - double vowel syllables (ou and ow) and the spelling rules for those sounds, trick words (Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, bought, library, piece)

Unit 15 (2 weeks) - double vowel syllables (oo, ou, ue, and ew) and the spelling rules for those sounds, trick words (January, February, July, enough, special, paste)

Unit 16 (1 week) - double vowel syllables (au and aw) and spelling options for those sounds, trick words (August, December, daughter)

Unit 17 (2 weeks) - consonant-le syllable, trick words (laugh, favorite, sugar, trouble, couple, young)
