Key Concepts for Unit 3
Closed Syllable Exceptions- closed syllables usually have a short vowel sound like in the word "up." There are 5 exceptions to this rule:
/ild/ as in child /old/ as in cold
/ost/ as in post /ind/ as in kind
/olt/ as in colt
These are exceptions because they have long vowel sounds.
Trick Words- words that cannot be tapped and do not follow spelling rules.
These must be memorized.
Current Trick Words- when, which, again, more, away
More vowel teams- students should recognize the following vowel teams in words and the sounds they make. We will not focus on the spelling rules for these combinations until a later unit. EX. coin, boy
