Key Concepts in Unit 1

vowels- a, e, i, o, u

consonants- all of the other letters in the alphabet

digraphs- 2 letters making one sound.  Ex. wh, ch, sh, th, ck

blends- 2 or 3 letters that make their own sound. Ex. bl, st, tr, str

closed syllables- a word or a part of a word that has one vowel closed in by one or more consonants.  They are short vowel sounds. Ex. at, mat, math, mast, clash.  

3 ways to make the /k/ sound in words- 
c usually at the beginning of words unless followed by an- e, i, y
usually used after consonants (walk)
ck always after a short vowel; at the end of words (Jack)
