Basic Fundations Information--(See current unit and sounds on sub page.)
Fundations provides students with a foundation for reading and spelling. At the second grade level it is used primarily as a spelling program. It is not the typical spelling program you may have grown up with. Students are taught sounds and phonetic patterns to help them spell words. The only words students need to memorize are "Trick Words" that don't follow phonetic rules. Fundations is systematic, sequential, and multi-sensory (dry erase boards, magnetic tiles, "marking-up words", visual, and oral.) There is lots of repetition, drill, and practice. UNITS ARE USUALLY COVERED OVER TWO WEEKS. AT THE END OF THE FIRST WEEK THERE IS A THREE SENTENCE TEST, AND AT THE END OF THE SECOND WEEK THERE IS A TEST WITH SOUNDS, TRICK WORDS, WORDS WITH THE FEATURED SOUND(S), AND TWO SENTENCES. This web page will help keep you informed and updated with current skills and Trick Words. Parent letters are also sent home at the start of each unit explaining new sounds and "Trick Words." Please watch for these IN THE HOMEWORK OR FRIDAY FOLDER.
UNIT 1----- Two WEEK Unit
The first several units in Fundations will review concepts taught in first grade. This base will help the students as new skills are introduced. Units 1-5 put a lot of emphasis on the closed syllable (short vowel). The vowel is closed in by one or more consonants. Some examples are apple, Ed, itch, pup, skip, candy.
