Here you will find information about AR reading requirements as well as monthly AR reading awards (see below). Watch for your child's personal AR Print-out to come home in the Friday Folder early each month.
The Accelerated Reading Program is one component of second reading instruction. The purpose of the program is to nurture and encourage independent reading. After taking a computerized reading test (Star Test), students are guided to read books within their reading range. As the school year progresses requirements will increase too. Students having difficulty may share reading with an adult. I encourage parents to ask their child oral questions as they read to be sure their child is comprehending the material. After a student completes a book they take a short computerized comprehension test (5-10 questions depending on length of the book). They must pass with 80% accuracy. There will be some time to read in class, but reading at home is a must! In our classroom awards are given monthly for most books read, best percentage, highest reading level, and most points. Points are awarded on length and difficulty of the book. Prizes are also awarded for passing all tests taken.
